Technical drawings often have many labels that display important information about the objects or elements in the document. In SmartSketch there are two types of labels: text labels and SmartLabels. In this exercise, you will place several SmartLabels in your diagram.

A SmartLabel is associated to an object's or element's text attributes. A SmartLabel displays the attributes of the element or object as text in the document. You can drag SmartLabels from the Symbol Explorer into the current document. As you change an element's or object's attributes in the Attribute Viewer or the Properties dialog box, the SmartLabel's text updates to display those changes.

In this lesson, you will associate a  SmartLabel with a symbol and change the symbol's attribute Type in the Attribute Viewer. Then you'll unlock and move a SmartLabel to another location on a symbol.

Click the Show Me Show Me  button on the SmartSketch Learning Center toolbar to view a demonstration of the tasks in this lesson.

  1. In the Cables folder, drag the Type Label.sym symbol onto the drawing sheet, but don't release the mouse button.
  2. Continuing to press and hold, move the label close to the connector until the connector turns red. Then release the label.

Notice that the label displays the connector's Type value in the Attribute Viewer.

  1. Click the connector so that it is highlighted.
  2. In the Attribute Viewer, type Printer Cable in the Type field, and press Enter.
  3. Notice that the label updates to display the new Type attribute.
