Stage 1 Module

The first component of the Space Station to be launched is the Stage 1 Module, known officially as either the Functional Energy Block or FGB. Launched on Russia's Proton launch vehicle, the Stage 1 Module possesses all the necessary systems to operate as an independent orbital vehicle, including propulsion, guidance, communications, electrical power and thermal control systems. Until the Service Module is added, the Stage 1 Module will be responsible for the reboost function and the Space Station's orientation control. The Stage 1 Module will generate three kilowatts of power and it will have a pressurized volume to provide a controlled environment for the systems components.

The Stage 1 Module is being jointly constructed by Boeing and RSC Energia, with the actual construction taking place in Russia.
